Project type
Competition Choreography
Date
Spring 2024
Location
Madison, Wisconsin
For their 2024 ICCA season, I had the honor to create choreography for the incredible Pitches and Notes. I designed and created original choreography for the pieces Crimson, and Nowhere Near. Enjoy my artist statements below.
Crimson introduces a powerful dynamic of good versus evil, sharing with us a story that shows everything is not always what it seems. Crimson and black. Two colors, two stories. Colors that can compliment each other or that never seem to mix. We are introduced to Rebecca, our enticing soloist who sparks something within the group, fear and power, anger and resolution. Two teams form and we see a lasting battle for control. We witness as everyone just gains more and more confidence to stand up for what they believe in. Outwardly we witness this realization where they all can do more good together but there is an underlying feeling of discomfort. Crimson and black. What does it mean. Share with me your story and I will try and hear.
Nowhere Near shares the familiar feeling of our heart aching, as though something is passing us by. Words left unsaid. Relationships hurt. We all search to feel understood. This piece shares that initial hurt of feeling as though you’re loosing someone who is incredibly important to you. The feeling of a wedge entering into your relationship. This broken love story informs us all to reach out to those you’re missing and practice open ears. This takes courage. Something we all could find time to practice more often.
